Schatzie's brings taste of Europe to Hub City

I was born and raised in a small town in Germany, Zimmern to be exact, near Tauberbischofsheim, 30 miles from Würzburg (where most of my family still lives) - I came to the United States after my mom Helga (known as Omi), married my stepdad James (a US Army veteran), in Karlsruhe. Unfortunately he is no longer with us, but is still greatly missed. I have a son James and his two daughters, my granddaughters, Ava and Adalyn.

Many will remember the German store in Hagerstown - and how sad it was when it closed. And like many I know - I missed the German bread (and we know we can’t do without our German bread!). So on my monthly trips to visit with mom in Pennsylvania; she would always have some German bread on hand for me.

In September 2014, mom bought 30 slices of bread for me, one for each day of the month – enough until my next visit. I can’t begin to tell you how happy I was with just those 30 slices of bread. When I came home, I shared my excitement with Evelyn (now also Schatzie's partner) about my mom getting me 30 slices of German bread. Evelyn had a great thought – that if I was missing this bread so much – so must others. So why not open up a small shop and sell German bread? What a brilliant idea!

I was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. My family is from Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. I have two sons, Jonathan and Alfredo. Alfredo has two beautiful children (my adorable grandchildren), Avion & Isabella.

I spent 3 years in Berlin, Germany as a US Army spouse. As an Army spouse familiar with the frequent moves to unpleasant places – I really loved the time spent in Berlin, and I felt it was one of the most beautiful places to live. Today I’m reliving these pleasant memories of Germany with Schatzie's German Deli.
